If you listen to the lyrics and do the math, the Beast was actually only 11 years old when the haggard old lady offers him a rose at the beginning of the movie.
It's really not fair to curse a little boy for not wanting to be philanthropic. Sure, he was spoiled, but probably frightened at the time and really wanted her to leave. Lastly, what 11 year old boy wants a single rose?

Deep Thought #17
Of all the Disney characters that fall to their deaths, I think Gaston has the best chance of living through it - after all, he is "roughly the size of a barge." I think it would be neat to see a sequel where it tells the story of his survival and his crawling back to the village with a broken back, all while developing the virtues of respect towards others and humility...
